TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT

TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT

Citizen-generated traffic complaints are very common in all communities and Wilton Manors is no exception. In fact, very few things cause people as much anxiety as when drivers speed through the neighborhood while young children are outside playing.

Report Traffic Problems

If you notice a pattern of traffic violations in your neighborhood or during your normal commute, let us know. Click here to report traffic complaints, or call our Dispatch Center or Operations Bureau Captain at 954-390-2150. Similarly, if you are aware of habitually poor drivers or aggressive drivers, you can also let us know. The Police Department will contact these persons and advise them of anonymous complaints, perhaps helping to change behaviors and averting potential tragedy.
The Wilton Manors Police Department utilizes traffic radar units in marked patrol car to assist in our goal of reducing incidents of speeding and aggressive driving in our neighborhoods and main traffic corridors, and to reduce the number of traffic crashes within our jurisdiction. We also employ radar signs at various locations to educate and remind motorists of speed limits in some areas of the City, and to allow them the opportunity to assess their own driving habits. In addition, we utilize in-car video cameras that record audio and video of each traffic stop, for use in court, for training purposes, and for compliance with state mandated racial profiling statutes.

DUI

The Wilton Manors Police Department recognizes that alcohol often plays a precursory role in serious traffic crashes. We regularly participate in traffic “lane squeezes” for the purpose of identifying traffic and equipment violations. Although often perceived as cumbersome and inconvenient, lane squeezes send a clear message that our community does not tolerate or encourage routine traffic violators and lets people know that this is a focus of our enforcement strategy.

Stealth Police Car

As part of our normal patrol operations, the Wilton Manors Police Department enforces all laws governing the safe operation of motor vehicles. Many marked patrol units are equipped with state-of-the-art radar units to monitor and deter speed limit violators. Towards that goal the department also utilizes a "stealth" police vehicle. This patrol car is fully marked, but does not have the customary emergency lighting equipment on its roof, thus making it more difficult for violators to detect.

SPEED & MESSAGE DISPLAY TRAILER

As an additional deterrent and safety measure, the city has a SPEED TRAILER.
The speed trailer is towed to an area in town that needs additional enforcement and set up for monitoring speed. While the speeds displayed on the message board are accurate, this trailer is not designed to take photos of passing cars or used to issue summonses. The message board is equipped to display the speed of oncoming traffic.
Use of this sign, followed with periodic enforcement, has proven to be an effective means of making drivers more aware of their speed. As a reminder, most residential streets have a posted speed limit of 25 MPH and other roadways have a posted speed limit of 35 MPH.
If you feel a need for additional enforcement on your street, please contact the Police Traffic Safety Division.
